JAR PPL Flying Rates
National Private Pilots Licence ( NPPL )

In August 2002, the new NPPL came into being. This is intended to be a recreational licence, which will in practice, have only a few less privileges than the current JAR PPL. The main ones are:

1. No flying outside UK airspace.
2. Aircraft to have a max. of 4 seats.

The minimum flying time for the course is 32hrs. plus the flight tests, and this is achieved mostly due to there being no Radio Nav. instruction, and less solo time. All other aspects of the flying training syllabus is similar to the JAR course.

The written exams will be the seme as for the JAR PPL , though this may be simplified in future if there is a case for doing it.

An important consideration for many is the relaxation in medical standards. An applicant will only be required to sign a declaration to say he is fit to fly with a counter signature from his G.P.. This may involve a few tests by the G.P. but will still represent a considerable saving in cost.

The main saving in cost, however, will be due to the reduction in hours flown. The hourly rate will be similar to that for the JAR course. It should also be said at this stage, that the less able student may struggle to complete the course in 32hrs , and I would advise students to try and budget for around 40.

This new licence is now becoming very popular, especially with more mature students. Also, having gained an N.P.P.L, it is very easy to upgrade to the J.A.R. P.P.L.

Package price for 32hrs. flying: £3995 (½ at start of course, remainder after 16hrs)
Additional expenses will be:

landings (approx. 60) £400
Nav. & Gen. Handling Test £250
Written Exams x 6 £20 each
Radio Telephony exam £60

Prices are approximate.
